Since the construction of the new Groninger
Museum, GasTerra (still part of Gasunie in those days) has been the main sponsor. GasTerra sponsors the
museum by a fixed amount each year to enable high-profile exhibitions to be held.
The latest example is the Waterhouse exhibition, which attracted a record number of over 143,000
visitors. The museum's permanent collection includes Asian ceramics, works by the
artists' association "De Ploeg" dating from the last century, watercolours and paintings
from the Mesdag collection and coins and medals from over the centuries. On average, the museum
attracts about 250,000 visitors every year.
