Security of Supply
The European Commission has published a security of supply proposal for the purpose of dealing with cross-border crisis situations. GasTerra supports the initiative in order to secure short-term and long-term security of European supply. However, the plan first needs to be worked out in more detail and improved before it is made binding. One important consideration in this is that the Netherlands has and retains full control of Dutch natural gas. The proposal does not yet take this factor into account sufficiently. It does not fully recognise the special position occupied by the Netherlands as the only country in the European Union which has sufficient supplies of its own. GasTerra also believes that the supply of gas during crisis situations can be carried out to a high standard under contracts and on market terms. Previous interruptions in supply from Russia did not result in market disruption which would seem to indicate that too much intervention in European regulation is unnecessary. The intricacy of the pipeline system in order to be able to supply customers from different directions is essential. Its previous history has also allowed the Netherlands to build up a special position in this regard; any potential interruptions in natural gas supply can be absorbed by the extensive network.
