An everyday story of....
Joost Wempe
Account manager

What is your job at GasTerra?
I’m an account manager for Gas Purchases in the Long-Term Markets Department. Together with two colleagues, I act as the sales contact for gas producers in the Netherlands, who are also referred to as the small fields producers. In fact, my job brings me into contact with a wide range of producers. We discuss on a daily basis operational issues that affect gas production and which generally call for an immediate response. We also carry out an annual review of our prices and evaluate our conditions. This process often requires approval from our shareholders, so I’m frequently in touch with them as well. All of which makes for a very varied job.

How did you begin working for GasTerra?
I first came into contact with GasTerra when I was doing a study assignment for my econometrics degree in Groningen. I enjoyed our working relationship so much that I joined the company’s Market Research Department in December 2004 after I graduated. After two and a half years, I was given the chance to go on an eight-month secondment to the International Energy Agency (IEA) in Paris. The IEA, which was established in 1974 following the first oil crisis, is a forum of 27 industrialised nations which monitors the state of the energy market. It was an opportunity I couldn’t afford to miss. When I came back I immediately began working at my new post as account manager for Gas Purchases.

What do you like best about working for GasTerra?
The gas business, like the energy business as a whole, is incredibly dynamic and therefore very inspiring to work in. Issues like how best to use our remaining gas stocks, where we’ll be getting our energy from in the future and how to offset the greenhouse effect – all these are questions that are on almost everyone’s mind. GasTerra is a friendly and transparent club of highly motivated people, and everyone is very approachable. The work is extremely challenging and I’m given plenty of scope to tackle things in my own way.
