General info

Since the early 1960s, natural gas has played a key role in the Dutch energy supply. It is currently used for almost half of the total energy demand. Over the last few years it has become generally accepted that fossil fuels are not only finite, but that they have harmful effects on the environment when they are burned. Sustainable energy sources like biogas, sun and wind will ultimately last longer. But the transition towards completely sustainable energy management will be a lengthy process. Natural gas will be indispensable during the transitional period. Firstly, because it is the cleanest fossil fuel, and secondly it can be used flexibly in order to safeguard the energy supply. Fortunately there is sufficient natural gas, it will last us for many decades to come.
